Complete Street and Gulch Greenway -
11th Avenue Nashville, TN
The Metro Parks Department and Metro Public Works tasked Collier Engineering along with RPM Transportation Consultants and Hawkins Partners with developing a plan to enhance the once industrialized 11th Avenue South corridor by creating green space and a more livable environment. This area, which is now known as The Gulch, has evolved into a residential and shared-use district servicing everything from high rise condominiums to restaurants and small businesses. The Gulch’s transformation warranted an obvious need for more pedestrian-friendly accommodations and renovations. Collier operated as the Project Manager and CEI Firm throughout the project’s duration, while providing Civil, Site, and Storm Water Design services. Collier Engineering also acted as the Department Liaison between Metro Parks and Metro Public Works due to its joint project. Multiple meetings with the various stakeholders took place to develop a plan to accommodate the needs of neighboring businesses, organizations, and residents. The existing sidewalks along 11th Avenue were reconstructed and widened to ensure ADA compliance, greater accessibility, and combined with a designed 5’ Cycle Track to accommodate alternative modes of transportation to and from the district. The 11th Avenue “Complete Street” project also implemented a Low Impact Design (LID) feature Bio-Retention Swales, reducing stormwater impacts. The project includes the addition of 800 L.F. of Greenway Trail and a 12,600 S.F. recreation area, complete with workout stations and equipment. Creating a more pedestrian-accessible corridor encourages the residents, patrons, and local employees of The Gulch to seek alternate transportation modes and provide a more environmental-friendly approach to daily life. Additionally, the project will significantly impact the reduction of congestion in what proves to be a quickly growing area, thus easing the growing pains as much as possible.
