Cumberland River - Riverbank Restoration
Shelby Park - Nashville, TN
Shelby Park is a major riverfront park along the Cumberland River and one of Nashville’s most valued public recreational spaces. Metro Nashville Parks and Recreation selected Collier Engineering to provide engineering services to stabilize the Cumberland Riverbank along Davidson Street near the Shelby Naval Building, addressing ongoing erosion while protecting the roadway and critical park infrastructure.
Collier provided comprehensive survey, analysis, design, permitting, and construction support for the riverbank stabilization and reconstruction of approximately 1,000 feet of Davidson Street. The project required extensive investigation of river and subsurface conditions, including hydrographic river-bottom surveying, geophysical investigation, and geotechnical analysis. Using these findings, Collier developed a durable stabilization approach, prepared detailed engineering plans, coordinated regulatory permitting, and supported the project through bidding and construction.
Following severe storms and flooding that accelerated erosion and caused portions of Davidson Street to slump toward the Cumberland River, the project scope expanded to include additional slide repair measures. Collier incorporated excavation, slope stabilization, and riverbank restoration into the design to protect the roadway and reduce the risk of future bank failure. Through construction administration, quality assurance inspections, and project closeout, Collier helped provide a long-term solution that protects park infrastructure while preserving access to this important riverfront destination.
