Landscape Improvements - Antioch, TN.

Collier Engineering was hired to renovate and improve the native landscapes of several public spaces across Nashville. One example project is the Southeast Branch Library/Community Center. The site was originally designed to meet LEED standards, which required the use of native plants and bioretention.

Southeast Branch Library/Community Center is located at the Global Mall at the Crossings (previously Hickory Hollow Mall). The park space and parking lot islands were redesigned along with the Ford Ice Center entrance area. The three primary concerns with this site was the visual impact, erosion, and rainwater entering the Ford Ice Center building.

Primary issues found at the site:

  • Poor planning and execution of landscape designs

  • Heavy foot traffic and general abuse by park goers

  • Damaged irrigation

  • Lack of irrigation

  • Wrong plants for the space

  • Poor soils

  • Poor drainage

  • Erosion

We began with a thorough analysis and investigation of the issues. The knowledge gained through these studies was used to develop thoughtful, customized solutions specific to the site. Our solutions mimicked natural systems as much as possible. Replacement plants were selected for their ability to deter or withstand foot traffic and abuse seen on public sites. This produced more effective drainage systems along with a thriving and resilient landscape.

After completing the improvement project, the overall perception and understanding of a native landscape changed dramatically with visitors to the site. One of the greatest results we can get out of a project is finding out that we have had a positive effect on the public’s understanding of the project and to see them take on a sense of ownership of it. At Collier Engineering, we believe public education and awareness should always be a key component of our projects. Let us know how we can help your community improve an existing space or even create a totally new one.
