Runway Rehabilitation + Safety Area Improvements
Collier Engineering (Collier) was retained by Wright Paving to conduct Quality Control and Construction Materials Engineering and Testing (QC/CMET) services for the airport rehabilitation and improvements. The testing was performed in general accordance with the rigorous requirements promulgated by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) protocol. Collier’s responsibilities included development of a mix design for SS-220 cement-treated base that incorporated reclaimed materials generated by runway demolition. For continuity of service, Collier was retained to provide daily QC oversight and documentation of reclamation and stabilization work. Specific operations involving application and mixing of Portland cement, moisture conditioning, and sustained thickness using phenolphthalein during construction were continuously and visually observed to confirm compliance with job requirements. Further, Collier performed compaction and in-place density checks as part of the QC oversight, and field specimens were collected, molded, cured and tested for compressive strength to help verify adherence to specifications. In addition, Collier provided on site consultation, engineering assistance, and testing during construction of asphalt paving operations. We monitored test strip construction and conducted inplace density tests of compacted P-401 Asphalt, and helped designate areas of acceptance testing conducted by the quality assurance firm. Project reporting including daily logs, observation summaries, test results, and related monitoring documentation were continuously published to the Engineer of Record.
